Location:
Phalen Lake is located east of Arcade Street and north of Wheelock Parkway in Phalen Lake Regional Park.
Species Present:
Walleye: low abundance, average size.
Northern Pike: average abundance, average size.
Largemouth Bass: average abundance, average size.
Bluegill: above average abundance, average size.
Crappie: lower than average abundance, smaller than average size.
Hybrid Muskie: low abundance, average size.
Channel Catfish: present, average size.
Bullhead species: lower than average abundance, average size.
Yellow Perch: average abundance, small size.
Boat Access:
The boat access is located at the northwest corner of the lake just south of the channel to Round Lake. To reach the boat access travel east of Highway 61 on Frost Ave to East Shore Drive. Turn right on East shore drive to the lake, then turn right to reach the boat access. This lake has a surface use regulation which restricts boaters to the use of electric motors only.
The City of St. Paul offers canoe rental on this lake. The canoe rental concession is midway along the west shore of the lake. This area is accessed from the main park entrance road off Wheelock Parkway.
Shore Fishing:
The entire shoreline of both Phalen Lake and Round Lake is within Phalen Lake Regional Park. In addition, there is a fishing pier on Round Lake and another pier on Phalen. Fishing from shore may be limited by aquatic vegetation during a portion of the year.
Management Plans:
- Fisheries standard lake survey in 2021.
- Stock 160 pounds of Walleye fingerlings annually.
- Stock 120 Hybrid Muskie in odd numbered years.
- Stock 800 White Bass adults or 4,000 fingerlings.
Aquatic Invasive Species Alert:
This lake contains Eurasian watermilfoil. Remove any visible plants from your boat, trailer, or other boating equipment before leaving the lake.
Comments:
Phalen Lake is very popular with shore anglers. Some of the more popular spots are from the fishing piers, below the parking lot at the end of Larpenteur Ave along East Shore Drive, and along the south shore. Boat angling is possible using the boat access, but is limited to the use of electric motors only.
