A strong Alberta Clipper dropped a swath of one to four inches of snow across central and southern Minnesota on Monday, January 12. The highest total found was 6.8 inches at Red Wing. The Twin Cities International Airport reported 4.7 inches of snow. which makes this storm the largest snow event of the 2008-09 winter season so far at the Twin Cities Airport.
After the snow was over very frigid air swooped into the state and brought the lowest temperature readings so far this season. The -18 reported at the Twin Cities International Airport on January 13 was the coldest minimum since January 30, 2004 when the mercury plummeted to -24. Extreme cold temperatures have been fairly rare in recent years in the Twin Cities with January 13th being only the second time in the 2000's that there has been a low of -18 or colder.
International Falls set a record low of -40, breaking the old record of -36 that was set in 1979. The coldest air temperature minimum found in the state was Embarrass with -44.
