Early morning thunderstorms developed during the morning hours of July 24 and moved to the southeast across the eastern Twin Cities Metro area. Multiple reports of hail ranging from a quarter to half dollar size were reported in the eastern Twin Cities. The thunderstorms developed over Anoka and Chisago Counties at about 7am, and drifted to the southeast. By 8:30am, the storms had moved over Maplewood, North St. Paul and Oakdale, with many reports of quarter size hail, and some golf ball sized hail reported near McKnight and Highway 36 in Maplewood. By 9am the storms had moved into Washington County and caused some wind damage to trees, along with more hail. The storms then moved into southeast Minnesota. The largest hail reported to the National Weather Service was two inches (hen egg size) 2 miles east of Clairmont in Dodge County.

Looking at past records for the Twin Cities, July ranks third for the month with the most hail reports behind May and June. It is unusual to have large hail soon after sunrise in the Twin Cities. The bulk of large hail reports are from 2 to 9 pm. Only a fraction of past reports are in the early morning hours.
