A sluggish summer pattern spawned slow moving thunderstorms over parts of Minnesota on August 16 and 17th. Rains were intense with some of these storms with tropical downpours over sections of Cass, Chippewa, Dakota, Goodhue, Otter Tail, and Dakota County. One of the highest 24-hour rainfall totals found so far was 5.56 inches at Hampton in Dakota County. 4.86 inches was measured two miles to the northeast of Cannon Falls. These heavy rains washed out culverts and caused damage to roads in southeastern Dakota County.
Outside the most intense rains, the moisture was welcome. Much of central and southern Minnesota is short of moisture. Even with the recent rainfall, most areas in central and southern Minnesota are about two to five inches short of average over the past seven weeks.
