Folks sported shorts and sandals in Mid-October as temperatures were soared to 20 degrees above normal across the state on October 11, 2015.
A powerful area of low pressure that was over southern Manitoba on October 11 moved to the east-southeast to southern Ontario by Monday, October 12. A cold front ushering in strong winds moved to the east across the Dakotas and into Minnesota by the evening of October 11.
Out ahead of this system, warm dry air surged northward and brought record-setting high temperatures across the region. The warmest temperature in Minnesota from a National Weather Service Cooperative Volunteer station was 97 degrees at Sabin in Clay County. This the warmest temperature in Minnesota recorded so late in the season.
Many cities set record high temperatures for October 11. International Falls set a record of 88 degrees and this is the latest it has been so warm at that location. The 85 degree high temperature in the Twin Cities broke the old record of 84 degrees from 1930. Duluth saw 84 degrees and broke the old record of 79 set in 1995. St. Cloud saw a high of 83 and that broke the old record of 82 degrees set in 1930.
The cold front that swept across the state on the evening of the 11th brought very strong winds. Winds were gusting up to 54 mph at Crookston and Morris during the morning of October 12. The highest wind gust found in Minnesota so far for October 11-12 is 60 mph at Hallock on October 11.
