Winter heralded its return to Minnesota with a blizzard.
A classic "Gale of November" hit the Upper Midwest on Friday, November 18 and brought with it heavy thunderstorms and heavy snow across Minnesota. The long-anticipated storm took form over Kansas during the evening of November 17. The low pressure intensified and moved northeast and was centered over west central Wisconsin by the afternoon of Nov 18. Blizzard warnings were posted for the 18th over northern and western Minnesota.
Snow began to develop during the evening hours of the 17th over north central Minnesota and continued through the overnight hours and all day on the 18th. Visibilities were near zero at times in places like Brainerd, Willmar and Hibbing during the afternoon. Strong thunderstorms developed over southern and eastern Minnesota during the morning of the 18th and raced northward, dropping some rice-sized to pea-sized hail over the Twin Cities. The rain changed over the snow in the Twin Cities during the afternoon. Winds gusted to 55pm at Sky Harbor Airport on Duluth's Park Point. The highest wind gust at the Twin Cities International Airport was 59mph at around 4pm. The highest snowfall total found was 25.0 inches 5 miles east of Leader in southern Cass County.
