Tornadoes were reported in west central Minnesota during the evening hours of June 13, 2017.
In the midst of a stormy week, another round of severe storms hit Minnesota on June 13th. The first round was a line of storms that swept across northern Minnesota, there was some large branches down in Koochiching and Carlton Counties due to the strong winds that followed behind the thunderstorms. These storms brought some needed rain to northern Minnesota. Attention then turned to rapidly developing thunderstorms over west central Minnesota that became severe in the afternoon and evening. Preliminary reports noted five tornadoes in Minnesota. Two of which were reported near Hancock in Stevens County and one tornado to the west of Cyrus in Stevens County. There were two in Big Stone County, one by Clinton and the other by Johnson in the northern part of the county.
The June heat continued on the 13th with the fifth 90 degree temperature recorded in the Twin Cities so far this summer, the last time there were five 90 degree temperatures so early in the season was in 2012 with also five reported through June 13. The average temperature in the Twin Cities from June 1-13 was 74.7 degrees, the only warmer June 1-3 in the Twin Cities back to the 1870's was 76.1 degrees in 1976.
