Beneficial rains fell over the state, but there's still a long way to go to erase precipitation deficits.
The latest heat wave ended with some welcome rains across the state. The heaviest rains were in two west to east areas, from Long Prairie to Moose Lake and in southern Minnesota from Windom though Winona. There were large areas of one half to an inch and a half of rain, with pockets of two inches or more. One of the heaviest rainfalls found so far was 2.63 inches at Wells in Faribault County.
Despite the rains, many places in central and northern Minnesota are from three to six inches below normal since April 1 and over southern Minnesota from four to seven inches short of normal. The only exceptions are in the southeast along the Mississippi River and parts of northeast Minnesota. The Twin Cities International Airport saw .43 inches of precipitation, 4.01 inches short of normal since April 1. Minnesota City in southeast Minnesota is one of the few places in the state with above normal precipitation since April 1 and was .42 inches above normal.
There weren't many reports of severe storms with this event, but there were a few more active thunderstorm cells in the south east. Below are local storm reports courtesy the National Weather Service.
