It was a wet weekend for many across Minnesota. Waves of thunderstorms moved across the state, dropping as much as five inches of rain over a multi-day period. The cause of these heavy rains was mainly due to a low pressure area that began over Rocky Mountains on May 31st. With the already moist conditions across Minnesota, all that was needed was a little lift to spawn all these rain showers and thunderstorms. That lift came in the presence of that low pressure area as it moved northeast over Nebraska and into South Dakota during the day on Saturday, May 31. This low pressure continued to move into Minnesota by early Sunday firing off more showers and thunderstorms as it moved northeastward. By Monday June 2, the focus of the heavy rain shifted into northern Minnesota.
In general, much of southern and central Minnesota saw at least one to two inches of rain, with pockets of three to five inches of rain. Stearns County saw some of the heaviest rain. An automated rain gauge operated at a Discovery Farm near Sauk Center recorded 4.60 inches of rain in one hour during the afternoon of May 31. According to NOAA Atlas 14, the probability of receiving this much rain in one hour, at this location, in a given year, is 0.1 percent. Heavy rain was also reported in Faribault County. The highest rainfall total over the weekend from a National Weather Service Volunteer station was at Winnebago in Faribault county with 5.27 inches. Heavier rains also fell in the southwest metro area, with Flying Cloud Airport seeing 4.30 inches over the weekend. These heavy rains helped to propel Lake Minnetonka to its highest level in 109 years of lake level monitoring there.
The heavy rain capped off a wet May with St. Cloud finishing with 6.74 inches of rain for the month, or 3.79 inches above normal. For the Twin Cities, 2014 is now the second wettest January 1-June 1 period on record (1871-2014) with 16.84 inches, only 1965 is wetter with 19.47 inches.
The heavy rains continued into Monday, June 2nd over northern Minnesota with 5.96 inches of rain in 54 hours at the Chisholm/Hibbing Airport. This included 1.90 inches that fell in just 1 hour on June 1.
