August 24-28, 2018 was a stormy period in Minnesota with tornadoes, hail and flooding affecting various parts of the state.
On Friday, August 24, heavy rains fell across east central Minnesota. About an inch of rain fell in an hour at the Minnesota State Fair, bringing out umbrellas and ponchos. Quarter-sized hail was reported in Orono.
On Saturday, August 25, large hail fell in east central Minnesota with golf-ball sized hail reported in the morning hours, eight miles west of Braham in Isanti County. Half-dollar sized hail fell three miles east of Princeton and quarter-sized hail in Stacy and just south of Chisago City in Chisago County.
After dark on August 26, two tornadoes touched down in northwest Minnesota. These tornadoes impacted far northeastern Norman County, eastern Polk County, and north central Clearwater County. The tornado that hit Norman and Polk Counties touched down at 11:30pm and moved to the northeast. Trees were snapped and grain bins were rolled 100-200 yards from their foundation. The second tornado touched down in Polk County shortly after midnight and moved to the northeast, damaging acres of sunflowers and damaged boats and trailers at Pine Lake. Structures were also damaged several miles to the northeast of Clearbrook. One house had a wooden stake driven into its metal roof.
On August 27, the severe threat was shifted to the southeast. During the day, a cold front was draped across Minnesota from the southwest corner of the state through St. Cloud and to Duluth. A weak area of low pressure was along this front. As the front drifted southeast, strong upper level winds fueled strong thunderstorms especially during the afternoon and evening hours of August 27.
These storms brought strong winds and flooding rains. There were three weak tornadoes reported in southeast Minnesota. One was to the southwest of Nerstrand in Rice County, one near Vesta in Goodhue County and a third at Kasson in Dodge County. Damaging winds hit the Red Wing Airport with a measured gust of 82mph. These winds caused a hangar to collapse at the airport.
Heavy rains fell over east central and southeast Minnesota on August 27, especially in Kanabec and Pine County. A volunteer rain gage reader near Cloverton in Pine County measured 3.31 inches and the Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation Office in Mora had 2.86 inches.
Rains were more intense in far southeast Minnesota. Houston County was hit the hardest. The highest total found was 8.63 inches in 24 hours from a MNgage observer located in Brownsville along the Mississippi River. In Houston County, an area of approximately 9 townships or 324 square miles had six inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period.
In northwestern Houston County the Root River was reported to be flowing over Highway 16 in the early morning hours of August 28th. There was also street flooding in Caledonia, where the local Soil and Water Conservation Office reported 7.20 inches of rainfall. There was also street flooding in the city of La Crosse. Wisconsin and just south of town residents were being evacuated from homes along Highway 35.
As an insult to injury, an additional inch to an inch and a half fell during the day on August 28 over far southeastern Minnesota. The August 26-29 rainfall total at Caledonia in Houston County was 9.44 inches. By late in the day on Augest 28th the cold front had departed Minnesota and much cooler air filtered in behind it.
