Snapshot virtual tour
Welcome to the Gateway State Trail virtual tour! Discover miles of trail that wind through prairie, woods, and agricultural areas. We hope the tour prompts you to visit the state trail in person sometime soon.
Pine Point Park
The eastern-most portion of the trail ends in Pine Point Park. The park is administered by Washington County and has 5 miles of multi-use trails. If you use this parking lot, please be aware that Washington County requires permits on all vehicles. The future vision for the Gateway State Trail is to extend to William O'Brien State Park and then up to Interstate State Park.
Farm Near Highway 61
The Gateway State Trail is a total of 17.8 miles long. During the winter, the trail from Cuyuga Street to Jamaca Avenue is plowed for walkers.
Farm Fields
As you start to reach the eastern end of the trail, you will pass more and more agricultural areas.
Manning Prairie
Just west of the historic Manning Avenue Bridge, you will find Manning Prairie. This prairie is in the process of being restored. Throughout the year as you pass by, you may find staff trimming brush, collecting seeds, or even performing a prescribed fire.
Highway 96 Bridge
Enjoy the view as you travel over the Highway 96 Bridge. Underneath the bridge there is a parking lot, toilet, and horse corral. Just west of this bridge is Duluth Junction, where Brown's Creek State Trail will intersect the Gateway State Trail.
Ponds
Please be respectful of horses as you travel along the trail. Horses can be ridden on the eastern 9.2 miles of the trail.

Interstate 694 Underpass
Ride the trail in peace as traffic rushes overhead on the 694 overpass. This is the beginning of the horse trail which continues east to Pine Point Park.
55th Street North Parking Lot
Located in Oakdale near the intersection of Hadley Avenue and Highway 36, this is the trail's largest parking area and marks the midway point of the trail. The parking lot is a good dividing line between the rural eastern half of the trail and the more urban western half.
North St. Paul Urban Ecology Center
The trail borders the south edge of the North St. Paul Urban Ecology Center. Managed by the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District, this area was designed as a wetland restoration project and an urban environmental education resource for area schools. This is a great place to enjoy natural resources in an urban setting.
Keller Creek Bridge
The trail crosses over Keller Creek, which connects Keller Lake and Lake Phalen. The connecting trail takes you to the Phalen Keller Regional Park, which includes a picnic area, fishing pier, boat ramp, play equipment, trails around the lakes, and more.
Westminester Bridge
Cross over Westminester Street in the city of St. Paul, and enjoy a view of the neighborhood from up high.
Community Gardens
Stop for a visit at the Gateway Community Gardens. The vision for the garden is fellowship through gardening and art. The lovely tiles on the pergola were created by local school children. Take time to enjoy the beautiful flowers and vegetables, but please don't pick anything.
