You are responsible for your own safety! Biking, mountain biking and inline skating all have their own inherent risks, and you assume complete responsibility for your own safety.
Safety tips for all cyclists
- Always wear a helmet and fasten it correctly. Helmets protect your head.
- Wear brightly colored clothing so others can see you.
- Bikers yield to horseback riders on multiple use trails. Horses may be easily spooked by your bike -- yell hello so they see you.
- Obey all rules and signs. Bikers must stop at all stop signs and traffic lights and indicate their turns, just like other vehicles.
- Ride on the right hand side of the road or trail. Let others know you are coming, and call out "on your left!" before you pass.
- Look both ways at intersections or driveways. Be on the lookout for people who may not see you.
- Study the trail map before you go. Look for topography changes that indicate hills or slopes.
- Keep your bike tuned up to prevent mechanical problems.
- Ride with a friend to promote fun and safety.
- Leave a copy of your itinerary with a responsible person.
Additional safety tips for mountain bikers
There are inherent risks to mountain biking. Ride at your own risk, and use extreme caution on the trails at all times!
- Mountain bike trails can have loose and slippery surfaces. Proceed carefully as rocks and trees frequently fall, and are commonly encountered on mountain bike trails.
- Test equipment before each ride. Carry (and know how to use) repair tools for mechanical problems.
- In addition to your properly fastened helmet, add extra safety gear as appropriate.
- Don't ride on any trails that are not currently open, or on wet or soft trails.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and other trail users.
- Always yield the trail.
- Ride to your ability and in control at all times. Keep your speed at a level that allows full control.
- Lower your tire pressure for better traction control.
- Lower your seat to help keep your center of gravity on long downhills.
