Snow Data Resources
The tools to measure snowfall are simple. A ruler and a flat surface are all that is necessary. Finding a representative location to measure snowfall and snow depth, free from the influence of wind and obstructions, is more problematic. Nonetheless, Twin Cities meteorologists over the years have attempted to quantify snowfall totals and snow depths on a daily, monthly, and seasonal basis.
The Twin Cities snowfall data set is derived by merging data from downtown St. Paul (1884-1891), downtown Minneapolis (1891-1938), the Twin Cities International Airport (1938-2000), the Chanhassen Office of the National Weather Service (2000-2004), and back to the Twin Cities International Airport (2004-present).
The Twin Cities snow depth data set is derived by merging data from downtown Minneapolis (1900-1938) with data from the Twin Cities International Airport (1938-2000), the Chanhassen Office of the National Weather Service (2000-2004), and back to the Twin Cities International Airport (2004-present).
