What do Len Busch Roses, Deep Portage Learning Center, Hedstrom Lumber, Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, and Birch Grove Community Center have in common? They're all using forms of woody biomass to provide energy in place of natural gas or propane oil. Additionally, by increasing demand for woody biomass, these facilities are encouraging sustainable biomass harvest as a tool for forest management. Linking habitat restoration to bioenergy
Recognizing the need for habitat restoration and alternative energy sources, the 2007 Minnesota Legislature provided $500,000 to the DNR Division of Ecological Resources to "prepare, authorize and implement habitat restoration plans on public and private properties" while providing roadside access to woody biomass for use by local bioenergy facilities. Additionally, a $600,000 appropriation from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund through the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) ? is connecting restoration with emerging markets. To date 15 restoration projects have been completed and close to 300 acres of ecologically inappropriate vegetation managed through the initiative. View report to the 2011 Legislature.
