Horseback trail safety, rules and etiquette

Horse trails are generally open May 1 to November 1, depending on weather conditions. Riders must carry a current Horse Pass.

Trail safety

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Wear appropriate footwear with a heel, that fits easily in and out of your stirrups. Avoid deep-lugged soles.
  • Ride single file when another rider is approaching from either direction.
  • When meeting hikers and bicyclists, reduce gait to a walk and allow room to pass.
  • If your horse kicks, tie a red ribbon in its tail.
  • If you have an unruly horse which you cannot control at all times, please do not bring the horse on public trails as you will be jeopardizing the safety of others.
  • Ride in groups.
  • Carry a trail map and know your location.
  • Carry a cell phone (in your pocket, not in saddlebag).

Trail etiquette

  • Share the trail with others
  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Keep right so others can pass.
  • Keep all pets on leash.
  • Obey traffic signs and rules.
  • Pack out all garbage and litter.
  • Respect adjoining landowners rights and privacy.
  • Warn other trail users when passing by giving an audible signal.
  • Some horses may be spooked by quiet bikers or in-line skaters. Let them know you are passing.
  • Overnight camping and campfires are permitted only on designated campsites.
  • Never leave campfires unattended.
  • Enjoy the beauty of wild plants & animals, but leave them undisturbed for all to enjoy.
