Protect is an appropriate approach when shoreline natural resource assets are in place and functioning:
An existing buffer zone extends as far as plants will grow into the water and upland from the edge of the water at least 25 feet onto the shore.
- Aquatic, transitional, and upland shoreline zones are healthy and functioning.
- There is strong diversity in the plant and animal communities.
- There are minimal amounts of invasive, non-native plants at manageable levels.
- Water quality is good, indicated in general (but not always) by:
- good water clarity
- infrequent or nonexistent algal blooms
- aquatic plant growth that is diverse
In this situation, the goal is to protect and preserve. Although the cost and time requirements are less than the Prevent Disturbance and Plant Native Species Techniques, PROTECT is not a passive approach.
Owners must be sure that the Site Assessment justifies this approach. Then, owners should monitor the lakeshore to ensure that the healthy conditions are maintained.

Protect existing native plants and keep invasive species out. Enjoy the beauty and vitality of your healthy shoreline and the variety of living creatures that it attracts.
If you wish to open the view of your shoreline from your home, carefully prune or selectively remove a few trees in your sight line (a concept called "editing"). This creates an attractive "frame" for a scenic view while retaining privacy.
