Cover-objects (plywood, corrugated metal, or geo-textiles) are placed singly or in arrays within targeted habitats to locate secretive animals such as snakes, skinks, or salamanders. The cover, approximately two by four feet in size, is checked periodically to locate herpetofauna basking on top of, or taking shelter beneath it. Temperature and moisture conditions vary among the different materials, making them attractive to either amphibians or reptiles.
